There has been a bit of speculation regarding the placement of Touch ID in the upcoming iPhone 8. Some rumors are saying it will be embedded in the display, while some are saying it could be placed on the back. Now a new report by Gordon Kelly at Forbes has suggested a new potential placement for the fingerprint scanner.
According to the report, it seems that Kelly has managed to obtain CAD files that are allegedly that of the iPhone 8, and together with case designer Nodus, they have managed to piece together a rendering of what the phone could look like. He also states that the power button on the iPhone 8 will be larger, and because of its larger size, Apple could potentially fit Touch ID into it as an alternative should the in-screen sensor not work out.
This is an interesting choice as companies such as Sony have adopted a similar placement for their phones. Whether or not Apple will resort to this placement remains to be seen. Other nuggets of information in Kelly’s report “confirms” the new orientation of the dual cameras on the phone, which apparently are better for taking photos in landscape mode.
