We’ve been hearing for many years now that Samsung is developing a foldable smartphone. While we’ve yet to see the company come out with one yet, ZTE launched its foldable device just last month. The ZTE Axon M is a dual screen smartphone that’s exclusive to AT&T in the United States. According to a new report, there’s going to be an influx of new foldable smartphones from several manufacturers next year.
Rumors and reports about Samsung’s foldable smartphone continue to come in. The company hasn’t said anything about its plans for a foldable smartphone as yet but the rumor mill is convinced that we’ll see one from Samsung at some point next year.
Chinese tech giant Huawei is also working on a foldable handset. The company’s dual screen smartphone is likely going to be unveiled before the end of next year.
Oppo, another Chinese manufacturer, has filed for patents related to foldable smartphones. This suggests that it’s also interested in launching dual screen smartphones. Since LG’s display subsidiary is said to be developing foldable displays, the possibility also exists that LG might jump on to the bandwagon as well at some point in the future.
If there’s a broad shift in the industry towards this form factor, we can certainly expect more companies to throw their hats in the ring.
There has been a lot of talk about Samsung building a foldable smartphone for the past couple of years. However, we’ve yet to see anything tangible from the company. It’s certainly not the only major company that might be working on something like this. At least Huawei has officially confirmed that it has a working prototype of its foldable smartphone. Huawei is expected to launch its foldable smartphone at some point next year.
ZTE has already beaten Samsung to the punch by launching the Axon M. It’s a foldable smartphone that’s exclusive to AT&T in the United States. The Axon M has two individual displays that can be folded out to form a single, massive display.
Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO Richard Yu has revealed to CNET in a recent interview that “We already have a working sample” of the foldable smartphone. He did add that Huawei isn’t ready to launch the device as yet.
“We have two screens,” he said, adding that there’s still a small gap between the two displays and that “we should get rid of that gap.”
Yu mentioned that it’s possible that Huawei might launch its foldable smartphone in 2018. No further information has been revealed about the device’s specifications and features. We will likely start hearing about them in the weeks leading up to this handset’s launch.

There had been a lot of rumors over the past couple of months about a new smartphone from ZTE. The company was reportedly working on a foldable smartphone called the Axon M and that’s precisely what it has officially announced today. ZTE’s much-rumored foldable smartphone is now official. As expected, it’s going to be an AT&T-exclusive in the United States.
The ZTE Axon M has dual 5.2 inch 1920×1080 TFT LCD displays that can be folded out to achieve a high 426 PPI. The implementation isn’t very seamless as there’s a visible gap between the two displays. Nevertheless, the narrow bezels help bring the two together to an extent.
There’s a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor under the hood with 4GB of RAM and 64GB storage. The handset also features a 20 megapixel rear camera, Android 7.1.2 Nougat, a 3,180mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 support.
ZTE says that the Axon M can be used in four different modes, namely Dual Mode, Extended Mode, Mirror Mode, and Traditional Mode. In Dual Mode, users will be able to have separate apps open on each display while Extended Mode will allow them to span both displays. The Mirror Mode will place the same content on both displays while the Traditional Mode will only use one display.
AT&T customers will be able to purchase the ZTE Axon M for $24.17 for 30 months starting in November. Pricing and availability information for markets like China, Japan, and Europe will be confirmed later.More...
