Restaurant In Israel Offers 50% Discount If You Switch Off Your Phone

Restaurant In Israel Offers 50% Discount If You Switch Off Your Phone

The obvious advantage of modern technology is that it allows us to be connected all the time, almost everywhere. Though some might say that the constant need to be connected has become more of an addiction. It is not unusual to see people at a restaurant engrossed in their smartphones, barely talking to the people they’re out with. While some of these people might be catching up on something important, most of them are usually checking social networks or playing games. We’ve all done it at some point. A restaurant owner in Israel is giving an incentive to his patrons if they switch off their phones, a full 50 percent discount on the check.

Jawdat Ibrahim owns the Abu Ghosh restaurant in a village of the same name outside Jerusalem. He is of the view that he’s changing something, a small change nonetheless, that might some day perhaps affect the “culture of eating” in modern times. Ibrahim didn’t like to see friends or even married couples sitting in silence and devoted to their devices, staring at them while the food grew cold, which meant that they ultimately sent it back to be reheated. He hopes that this added incentive might push patrons to appreciate the conversation, companionship and obviously the food. The restaurant initially tried collecting phones at the entrace, though that proved to be cumbersome. Customers are now trusted to turn off their phones, silent mode won’t do as even texting is not permitted.

Leaked Memo Details Android 4.4 Release Date For Few Samsung Devices

Android users around the world are anxiously waiting for OEMs to detail Android 4.4 KitKat update roadmap. So far HTC has revealed when exactly it plans to update a few of its devices, and so has Motorola, which actually rolled out KitKat for Moto X even before the Google Play Edition smartphones got the update. A purported memo from Samsung India’s R&D department has been leaked online and it details when Samsung plans to update few of its devices to Android 4.4 KitKat. There’s no way to confirm the authenticity of this document, but its the only kind of roadmap related to the update for Samsung devices that’s available out there at this point in time.

According to the document, Samsung Galaxy S4 model GT-I9500 and Galaxy Note 3 model SM-N900 will be updated to Android 4.4 KitKat in January 2014. Galaxy S3 model GT-I9300 and Galaxy Note 2 model SM-N7100 are mentioned as well, slated to receive the much awaited update between March and April 2014. Samsung hasn’t said anything as yet officially regarding the Android 4.4 KitKat roadmap, but if this is a legitimate document, then it looks like people who own these devices will have to wait for quite a while before they can get some KitKat goodness on their Samsung device. LG Will Reportedly Use Its Odin Processors In Devices Next Year

LG Will Reportedly Use Its Odin Processors In Devices Next Year

It has been rumored multiple times that LG might be working on its own processors that it can use in its own products. The processors are apparently codenamed “Odin.” According to the latest reports from local Korean publication DigitalTimes, not to be confused with infamous Taiwanese publication Digitimes, the Odin processors might be used in LG’s flagship devices in 2014. LG is reportedly preparing both quadcore and octacore versions of its Odin processors, using Cortex A15 cores clocked at 2.2GHz and Cortex A7 cores clocked at 1.7GHz.

A source cited in the report claims that Mali-T604/T624 and T720/760 are possible GPU choices that LG might go with for its Odin processors. Additional details about LG’s own processing chips are scarce at this point in time. However, it is believed that LG wants to make its own chipsets so that it can cut costs and match some of its competitors who manufacture their own chips as well. The report claims that LG might use these Odin chips as early as next year, the quadcore chips are expected to be bundled with LG smart TVs. LG is also rumored to use the octacore Odin chips in its flagship smartphones in 2014, as well as in the successor to its G Pad tablet.

Verizon And AT&T Offer BlackBerry Z10 Virtually Free On Contract

Verizon And AT&T Offer BlackBerry Z10 Virtually Free On Contract

Its no secret that the smartphones that BlackBerry released this year, the ones that were supposed to turn its fortunes around, haven’t been able to make a significant mark in the global smartphone market up till now. The first device to come with its new BlackBerry 10 platform was the Z10, released back in January. BlackBerry followed it up with the Q10, then the Q5 and most recently its very first phablet, the Z30. Sales haven’t been great and most retailers have significantly cut prices to clear out inventory. Verizon and AT&T too have done something along the same lines, Big Red now offers the BlackBerry Z10 free while AT&T wants $0.49 for it, though both require customers to sign a two year contract.

Originally, when it was released back in January, the Z10 cost $199 on contract. A few months down the line, the price was discounted to $99 on contract. Even that didn’t seem to have done the trick, because both carriers are now giving it away for virtually nothing, all that the customer needs to do is commit to a two year contract, which they would have to had to do even if they paid the full $199 for the device. While AT&T and Verizon look to clear their inventory of the device, they’re still sticking with the ailing Canadian manufacturer. T-Mobile has already stopped selling BlackBerry devices in its retail stores across the U.S.

AT&T Moto X Android 4.4 KitKat Update Released

After Verizon decided to be the first to pounce on the latest and greatest Android OS update, AT&T too has decided to follow suit. The AT&T Moto X Android 4.4 KitKat update has now been officially released, it brings all of the features and enhancements that users have come to expect from KitKat. Since the update is rolling out in stages, it might take a while before it becomes available for everyone. A little patience will get you a long way, it won’t take long before your AT&T Moto X notifies you that an OS update is available.

There’s not much to the official update changelog, considering the fact that the OS on Moto X is quite close to the vanilla Android experience. That said, it does bring all of the enhancements and improvements that KitKat has to offer, such as restyled status and navigation bars, a new full-screen mode, improved closed captioning, support for color Emoji and much more. The update also brings a new version of Google Hangouts app that has SMS integration, the native phone app has been improved to look up contacts from the dial pad. The update will be downloaded and installed automatically on the device itself, so there’s no need to hook it up with a computer. Also, since it is an official update, there won’t be a need to create a backup of your data prior to installing Android 4.4 on AT&T Moto X.
