A couple of years ago, PayPal launched the ability for users of BBM to send money through the messenger using PayPal’s platform. However it looks like that feature has come to an end. In an announcement by PayPal, they have discontinued the service wh…More...
On our smartphones, basically every app has its own purpose, which means that if you wanted to calculate something, you’d have to interrupt whatever you’re doing to pull up the calculator app. However we’ve started to see companies try to integrate more functions within their apps, like Google Maps and Uber.
However it looks like Uber’s integration isn’t ending with just Google Maps because BBM has announced that Uber will now be integrated into their app as well. What this means is that if you use BBM, you will be able to hail an Uber within the app itself as opposed to having to close the app and launch the Uber app.
According to BBM’s announcement on its blog, “With Uber on BBM, you and your friends can keep the conversation going while seamlessly requesting for an Uber ride in BBM. Taking your next ride is as simple as sending a message or a sticker!” However it should be noted that this feature seems to be limited to Indonesia for now, where the messenger app is still somewhat popular amongst the locals.
We’re not sure if there are plans to bring it to other markets, but given BBM’s decline in popularity over the years, especially in the West, it seems unlikely, but we’ll keep an eye out for it anyway just in case.More...
Unless you’re constantly giving out your BBM PIN to people you meet, chances are you will have to go through the BBM menu to find the PIN (or the QR code) to give it to someone who is trying to add you. It also doesn’t help that the BBM PINs are a string of letters and numbers, making it a pretty tricky thing to try and remember.
That being said, wouldn’t it be nice if we could customize our BBM PINs? Perhaps make them a little more identifiable? At the moment that is not a feature that BlackBerry is planning on introducing, but thanks to a recent screenshot of a survey sent in to the folks at BlackBerryOS, it seems that it is a feature BlackBerry could be considering. The top management at BlackBerry has been shuffled over the past few months, with several executives from the previous regime being shown the door, including ex-CEO Thorsten Heins. New BlackBerry CEO John Chen has brought on his own team, and has since structured the company into four major divisions. It was first rumored earlier today that BBM executive vice president Andrew Bocking had left the company, though it wasn’t entirely clear then if Bocking had left on his own or if he was shown the door, or if he had left at all. The company has confirmed that the former BBM head made the decision to leave BlackBerry.
BlackBerry continues to improve its now cross platform messaging service, BlackBerry Messenger, after opening it up for other platforms for the time time in history last year. Today an updated BBM for Android and iOS app has been announced which brings a new feature called Find Friends. This will allow users to easily find out which of their contacts are using BBM so they can send them a PIN invite. The feature is quite similar to what other cross platform messaging apps like WhatsApp offer, it too is capable of scanning through the users’ address book to find out which of their contacts are using its service.
While BlackBerry might not necessarily be doing too well in the smartphone department, there is at least one area that they might have some hope in and it is BBM. The app which was previously an exclusive for the BlackBerry platform was launched on iOS and Android devices last year, giving BlackBerry and even larger reach, although admittedly the app would have to compete with the likes of other messaging apps out there.
While the app itself is free, BlackBerry has not been shy about thinking on how to monetize the app, but if they are hoping to do that, they will probably need to get as many users as possible, which is why BlackBerry has recently launched a new promotion in the US and Canada where they will be giving away movie tickets and gift cards to users who share the app. (more…)
