iOS 7.0.5 For iPhone 5s And iPhone 5c Released

Adnan Farooqui January 29, 2014

iphone-5s-review-013

Apple today rolled out a rather rare iOS firmware update. Its rare because this firmware is only meant for the two new iPhones, and that too in one particular region. iOS 7.0.5 for iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c has been released to fix “network provisioning” issues on various Chinese models, Apple hasn’t specified exactly what those issues are. Users who already have iOS 7.0.4 installed on their iPhones can simply grab the update over the air, it weighs in at just 35MB. As you were, rest of the world, the update is exclusive to Chinese customers.

iPhone 5s Accounted For 59 Percent Of U.S. iPhone Sales Last Quarter [Report]

    Adnan Farooqui January 14, 2014

iPhone 5s Accounted For 59 Percent Of U.S. iPhone Sales Last Quarter [Report]

It goes without saying that the iPhone 5s has proved to be a popular smartphone, not only amongst first time buyers, but also amongst existing iPhone users who have opted for the flagship model as opposed to the relatively cheaper and “unapologetically plastic” iPhone 5c. A new report from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners reveals that iPhone 5s generated 59 percent of all iPhones sales in the previous quarter, stealing customers away from the iPhone 5c and the iPhone 4S.

As far as those two iPhones are concerned, the report finds that the iPhone 5c generated 27 percent of the sales and iPhone 4S accounted for 14 percent in the quarter ending December 2013. In contrast, during the same period back in 2012, the newly released iPhone 5 had generated 50 percent of all sales in the quarter whereas its predecessors, iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 had accounted for 32 percent and 18 percent respectively. Mike Levin, co-founder and partner at CIRP, said that in the most recent quarter, iPhone models with large storage capacities sold better than ever before. Could this mean that the market is hungry for more onboard storage on an iPhone? Apple has long been rumored to be considering an iPhone with 128GB of storage, perhaps it just might take the plunge with the next generation iPhone.

China Mobile Reportedly Has Over 1 Million iPhone 5s Units At Launch

China Mobile Reportedly Has Over 1 Million iPhone 5s Units At Launch

The much rumored deal between Apple and China Mobile was confirmed last month. We had been hearing for quite some time that both companies had been negotiating, at one point it was also rumored that Tim Cook flew down to China in order to meet with the carrier’s top brass. They’ve both finally reached an agreement which will see the world’s largest mobile carrier launch the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c on January 17th. It may have a lot of iPhone 5s units on hand to cope with demand, rumor has it that Foxconn has delivered a shipment of 1.4 million iPhone 5s units to China Mobile last week.

Foxconn is Apple’s primary manufacturer of the iPhone, sources with knowledge of the plans claim that they don’t know what the order volume for China Mobile will be after January. This particular order is meant to cater to demand following the launch on China Mobile. The carrier has more than 750 million subscribers, and analysts expect Apple to sell up to 20 million units on the carrier alone in 2014. China Mobile has already started taking pre-orders for the new iPhones, it finally launches them on January 17th. The deal could help Apple’s market share in China surge from six percent, the company’s smartphones are under a lot of pressure from Samsung’s devices, and those made by local Chinese vendors.

China Telecom Discounts iPhone 5s Ahead Of China Mobile Launch

China Telecom Discounts iPhone 5s Ahead Of China Mobile Launch

Late last month a move that was rumored for eons was finally announced by Apple. The company reached an agreement with China Mobile, the world’s largest mobile carrier with more than 750 million subscribers, to sell its smartphones to its customers. Analysts expect Apple to sell over 20 million iPhones on China Mobile alone in 2014, and while that remains to be seen, a rival of the carrier has just sweetened the deal for customers looking for a new iPhone. China Telecom has cut contract prices of the iPhone 5s up to 15 percent ahead of its launch on China Mobile, scheduled for January 17th.

China Telecom is also offering customers gift packages and price reductions that total nearly 800 yuan or roughly $130. This is deducted from the 16GB iPhone 5s list price which stands at 5,288 yuan. The gift pack includes accessories such as an external battery pack and an iPhone case, thus making it an added incentive for prospective customers to turn to China Telecom. Another rival carrier, China Unicom, hasn’t launched any promotions prior to the iPhones’ debut on China Mobile, perhaps it too will announce something as the inevitable launch date approaches. Despite being late to the party, China Mobile won’t offer the new iPhones at a reduced price, in fact, the prices are expected to be in line with that of its rivals.

iPhone 5s Jailbreak Tweak Lets You Use Touch ID As A Home Button

    Tyler Lee January 3, 2014

iPhone 5s Jailbreak Tweak Lets You Use Touch ID As A Home ButtonIf there’s one pet peeve that we’re sure many iOS users have about their device would be its home button. Considering that the home button needs to be pressed all the time in order to exit an app or switch between apps, it can wear out pretty fast, leaving some iOS users asking Apple for a soft key version. Granted you could always use the on-screen home button but that’s not a very elegant solution, but if you don’t mind jailbreaking your brand new iPhone 5s, here’s a tweak you’ll definitely want to check out.

The iOS 7 jailbreak was released not too long ago and if you have jailbroken your iPhone 5s, you can head on over to the Cydia Store and download a tweak called Virtual Home, which basically transforms your Touch ID sensor into a home button, allowing you to activate the home button without actually having to press it, thus extending its life by a bit. This is thanks to the Touch ID sensor’s metallic ring which is able to detect the presence of a finger. Since we don’t own a jailbroken iOS device, we can’t speak to its functionality, but in theory this sounds like a fantastic idea and if you want to check it out, Virtual Home is a free download and will only be compatible with the iPhone 5s (naturally).

Jolla Beats Out iPhone 5s At One Finnish Retailer

    Tyler Lee January 2, 2014

Jolla Beats Out iPhone 5s At One Finnish RetailerBack in May of 2013, Finnish company Jolla announced their first smartphone running the Sailfish operating system. Since we’ve never tried it out for ourselves, we can’t speak to its quality, functionality, ease of use, and features, but over in Finland, it would seem as though the handset has been well-received, at least by some. The device has recently gone up for sale back in December of 2013 and according to the figures released by major Finnish retailers, it looks like the Jolla smartphone is doing pretty well. This is based on the figures released by Finnish retailer DNA, who at the moment is the only retailer carrying the device.

Based on their figures, it seems as though Jolla’s offering is sitting at a comfortable number 5 spot in their top 10 best-selling phones for December 2013, which is actually a spot above Apple’s iPhone 5s which came in sixth place! It also looks as though Nokia’s Lumia 520 is still dominating as it came the retailer’s fourth most popular phone for that month. We’re not sure if Jolla will be able to continue maintaining its popularity or if it was popular simply because customers wanted to try something new, so we guess we will just have to wait and see what the numbers tell us in the upcoming months to get a better idea.

Apple And China Mobile Deal Is Official, iPhones Arriving January 17th

    Tyler Lee December 22, 2013

Apple And China Mobile Deal Is Official, iPhones Arriving January 17thWhile it has been rumored that Apple and China Mobile have been in talks, an actual date of when the deal would close has never been revealed, albeit rumored. One of the reasons is apparently due to lower than expected iPhone 5c sales, but in any case it looks like the deal has gone official, according to a press release sent out by Apple not too long ago. Both companies have announced that they have managed to close the deal on Sunday and for those in China under China Mobile’s network, those customers can look forward to getting their hands officially on an iPhone 5s or iPhone 5c come January 17th 2014.

However China Mobile has allowed customers to pre-register their interest by either heading on over to their website or by calling its customer service hotline. According to Tim Cook, “iPhone customers in China are an enthusiastic and rapidly growing group, and we can’t think of a better way to welcome in the Chinese New Year than getting an iPhone into the hands of every China Mobile customer who wants one.” Apple’s deal with China Mobile is expected to increase the number of iPhones sold, with analysts estimating an additional 12 million units for 2014, although with China Mobile’s subscriber base numbering over 750 million, perhaps those numbers could be higher. Either way it looks like Apple has managed to score with some of the largest carriers in the world, especially after landing a deal with Japan’s NTT DOCOMO earlier this year.

China Mobile Still In Talks With Apple For The iPhone

    Adnan Farooqui December 18, 2013

China Mobile Still In Talks With Apple For The iPhone

Speculation about the iPhone launch on China Mobile has been around this entire year, but so far no official announcement has been made yet. Recently there have been a barrage of rumors pointing to an imminent launch, with media outfits like The Wall Street Journal confirming the launch of iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c on China Mobile “around December 18th.” China’s official news agency also pegged the launch on this very day, the day China Mobile switches on its commercial 4G service. However the carrier proved these rumors false today as it made no announcement of an iPhone launch. Instead, it said that talks with Apple are currently underway and both parties have not reached an agreement as yet.

Addressing the press today, China Mobile Chairman Xi Guohua specifically cleared up that the carrier had no announcement to make on the iPhone deal with Apple. This was later confirmed in the day by Ge Qi, a spokesman for China Mobile. So as it stands right now, the iPhone’s won’t be launched for the carrier’s over 750 million subscribers. This launch is going to be a big one for Apple, with analysts expecting an additional $10 billion in yearly revenue coming from China Mobile subscribers alone. Analysts also predict that as many as 12 million iPhones can be sold on the carrier in 2014.

Apple Expected To Sell 175 Million iPhones In Fiscal 2014

    Adnan Farooqui December 12, 2013

Apple Expected To Sell 175 Million iPhones In Fiscal 2014

Various analysts have their own predictions about the number of iPhones Apple will be able to sell in fiscal 2014. Previously it was predicted that the company might be able to sell 171 million units in this time period, however according to Canaccord Genuity analyst Michael Walkley, Apple may very well sell 175 million iPhones in fiscal 2014. He also believes that the company may sell 186 million in fiscal 2015. Fiscal 2014 will end next September, so there’s still quite a lot of time for Apple to achieve this figure.

Walkley believes that there are two reasons why Apple is in a position to sell so many iPhones. Recent surveys have revealed that iPhone 5s sales are very strong, a survey called it the top selling smartphone on all major U.S. carriers as well as around the world. Such momentum could mean that the iPhone 5s will continue to bring in customers at a significant pace. Furthermore, Walkley is also of the view that the impending launch of the new iPhones on China Mobile will also help. This would be the first time that the iPhones would be launched on the world’s largest mobile carrier which has more than 700 million subscribers, it is already believed that as many as 20 million units can be sold through China Mobile in the first year alone.
