Prem Watsa To Convince John Chen To Unveil The BlackBerry Q20 Next Month

Tyler Lee March 11, 2014

Prem Watsa To Convince John Chen To Unveil The BlackBerry Q20 Next MonthThe BlackBerry Q20 is one of the few phones that BlackBerry shared at MWC 2014. Unfortunately it seems that for whatever reason, BlackBerry only plans on releasing them in September/October, meaning that BlackBerry users have a fair bit of waiting ahead of them.

However it seems that Prem Watsa, CEO of Fairfax who is the company that gave BlackBerry its financial injection, is trying to convince BlackBerry’s CEO, John Chen, to unveil the BlackBerry Q20 next month, and maybe even give a couple of handsets away as well. (more…)

John Chen’s Focus Will Be On BlackBerry’s Customer Base

    Tyler Lee March 10, 2014

John Chens Focus Will Be On BlackBerrys Customer BaseWhile BlackBerry is trying to find its next great product to turn things around for the company, they cannot forsake their current customers, who despite everything, have remained fiercely loyal to the Canadian company, and that’s what BlackBerry’s new CEO, John Chen, will be doing.

In a recent interview that John Chen did with the New York Times, he was quoted as saying that he would be taking a leaf out of Steve Jobs’ book and instead of focusing purely on creating a new product, he would turn his attention to the company’s current customer base. (more…)

Secusmart Selling Secure BlackBerry Phones For $2700

    Adnan Farooqui March 9, 2014

Secusmart Selling Secure BlackBerry Phones For $2700

BlackBerry is always quick to tout its security certifications, generally it is believed that the company puts a lot of focus on safety and security when it develops a new device. It has certainly made a name for itself by being the first choice of most politicians, businessmen and government employees around the world, but a German company has been tinkering with its devices to make them ever more secure. While only the “Porsche Design” BlackBerry phones sell for over $2000, Secusmart’s models go for as high as $2700.

BlackBerry Q20 Could See September/October Release

    Tyler Lee March 8, 2014

BlackBerry Q20 Could See September/October ReleaseDuring MWC 2014, BlackBerry announced two new devices – the BlackBerry Z3 which would be headed to Indonesia and was the result of BlackBerry’s partnership with Foxconn, and the BlackBerry Q20 which is a BlackBerry phone with a physical keyboard and integrated trackpad, a hark back to the glory days of the Canadian company.

Unfortunately not much was known about the Q20 besides its integrated trackpad design, meaning that in terms of availability, hardware specifications, design, and price, we’re pretty much left in the dark for now. (more…)

BlackBerry’s John Chen Calls iPhone Users Wall Huggers

    Tyler Lee March 8, 2014

BlackBerrys John Chen Calls iPhone Users Wall HuggersBlackBerry isn’t doing so good at the moment, based on our earlier reports which shows that the company actually lost market share to Windows Phone, not to mention having carriers lose confidence in them. All of this seems to make for an uphill battle for BlackBerry’s CEO, John Chen, who despite the odds believes that he will be able turn things around.

If anything Chen has a sense of humor regardless of how bleak the situation is, and even has no qualms about poking fun at the competition which he recently did during the Oasis Montgomery conference. (more…)

UK Carrier Thinks BlackBerry Is Dying Slowly

    Tyler Lee March 8, 2014

UK Carrier Thinks BlackBerry Is Dying SlowlyIt hardly comes as a surprise to many that BlackBerry isn’t doing so hot at the moment. We’re not sure what it is, it could be that more people prefer iOS and Android compared to the BlackBerry platform, it could be the hardware, it could also be the ecosystem in which there aren’t as many BlackBerry apps compared to iOS and Android.

However BlackBerry has a new leader in the form of John Chen who promises to turn the company around. In fact Chen recently expressed that he had a 50-50 chance to turning things around which we’re not sure if it should be taken as a good or bad sign. However despite these changes, UK carrier Three does not think that it will work out. (more…)

Windows Phone Narrowly Edges Out BlackBerry In The US

    Tyler Lee March 8, 2014

Windows Phone Narrowly Edges Out BlackBerry In The USBack in 2012, BlackBerry’s then CEO, Thorsten Heins, expressed his belief and confidence that BlackBerry could overtake Windows Phone and become the third most used smartphone operating system, behind both Android and iOS.

Unfortunately the latest numbers released by comScore are suggesting otherwise. In fact it seems that in terms of market share in the US, Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform has managed to edge out BlackBerry to claim the number two spot, although not by much. (more…)

BlackBerry Keyboard Patent Hints At Windermere’s Features

    Tyler Lee March 7, 2014

BlackBerry Keyboard Patent Hints At Windermeres FeaturesSo earlier last month, we caught wind of a BlackBerry device that was given the codename Windermere. As to how real this device is remains to be seen, but one of the interesting aspects of the phone isn’t so much its odd design, but its unique keyboard which according to the rumors, would sport a gesture-based physical keyboard.

Now thanks to a recent BlackBerry patent discovered by BBNews.pl, it seems to suggest that the Windermere could be true, and also reveals the technology behind the gesture-based keyboard for the phone. (more…)

BBM PINs Could Be Customizable In The Future

    Tyler Lee March 6, 2014

BBM PINs Could Be Customizable In The FutureUnless you’re constantly giving out your BBM PIN to people you meet, chances are you will have to go through the BBM menu to find the PIN (or the QR code) to give it to someone who is trying to add you. It also doesn’t help that the BBM PINs are a string of letters and numbers, making it a pretty tricky thing to try and remember.

That being said, wouldn’t it be nice if we could customize our BBM PINs? Perhaps make them a little more identifiable? At the moment that is not a feature that BlackBerry is planning on introducing, but thanks to a recent screenshot of a survey sent in to the folks at BlackBerryOS, it seems that it is a feature BlackBerry could be considering. BlackBerry Losing Popularity In Indonesia

    Tyler Lee February 11, 2014

BlackBerry Losing Popularity In IndonesiaBlackBerry is the brand that was once loved by enterprise users around the world, and eventually it started to gain some traction with regular folks as well who loved the exclusivity of BBM and the feel of BlackBerry’s keyboard. However touchscreen smartphones started to become more popular  and BlackBerry failed to capitalize on that trend early, leading to them losing ground to Apple and Samsung in most markets. However BlackBerry did retain a few loyal markets, such as Indonesia where the handset was extremely popular amongst the younger crowd, but it looks like even then their loyalty has begun to wane.

According to the latest report from the International Data Corporation (via the Jakarta Globe), it seems that BlackBerry’s shipments to Indonesia only accounted for 14% of the 11 million smartphones shipped to the country last year. Of course shipped does not equal to sales, so even if BlackBerry consisted of 14% but managed to sell their entire shipment, it would still be a good thing, although in reality that rarely is the case. When asked why they would switch from BlackBerry to a different platform, Indonesians claimed that lag and lack of features were some of the reasons, with Darwin Lie, an analyst at IDC Indonesia echoing those sentiments by saying that other platforms offer up more apps, making it a more attractive option.
