Mac: Logitech Craft Advanced Wireless Keyboard

Jesse Hollington October 13, 2017

Logitech’s new Craft Advanced Wireless Keyboard might possibly be the sexiest Bluetooth keyboard we’ve ever laid our hands on. Designed with creative types in mind, not only does Craft provide a very slick design, but it’s extremely solidly built and brings a whole new workflow with the new Crown — an aluminum dial that can be used to access context-specific tools, ranging from more obvious features like volume and brightness control right through to adjusting brightness, contrast, and saturation in Photoshop or adjusting charts in Excel. Smart backlighting not only adjusts automatically based on room conditions, but also remains off until Craft detects your hands approaching the keyboard — a cool and almost magical feature.

Review: Belkin 3.5mm Audio + Charge RockStar

Jesse Hollington October 12, 2017

The removal of the headphone jack on the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus last year caused no small degree of angst among tech enthusiasts; despite the fact that Apple included a Lightning to 3.5mm headphone adapter in the box, many raised the valid concern that this still didn’t provide a way to power, charge, or sync an iPhone while also listening to music. While Belkin was quite to respond to this need last fall with its $40 Lightning Audio + Charge RockStar, this initial solution left us a little perplexed, since instead of actually providing a 3.5mm audio jack, it simply offered two Lightning connectors, allowing you to connect power to one and using the Apple-supplied Lightning to 3.5mm adapter in the other — a functional but awkward solution. We suspect the usual arcane restrictions of Apple’s rather opaque MFi program were to blame for this rather kludgy approach, but whatever the reason, we’re definitely happy to see Belkin’s new 3.5mm Audio + Charge RockStar delivering what the original adapter should have in the first place.{/exp:char_limit}

News: Apple releases iOS 11.0.3 with a warning about ‘non-genuine replacement displays’

Jesse Hollington October 12, 2017

Apple has released iOS 11.0.3, a minor update for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch users that addresses specific issues with iOS 11 on older iPhone models — audio and haptic feedback problems on the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus and unresponsive touch input on some third-party iPhone 6s displays. The iOS 11.0.3 release notes also include a specific caution against “non-genuine replacement displays” emphasizing that “Apple-certified screen…

Review: Fabriq Chorus AirPlay and Bluetooth Alexa-Enabled Speaker

Jesse Hollington October 11, 2017

Last spring Fabriq released its debut speaker, bearing the company’s own name and combining AirPlay, Bluetooth, and Amazon Alexa support in a $50 package. While the original Fabriq wasn’t without its limitations — Alexa required push button activation and it only provided a scant five hours of listening time — we were quite impressed with what the company had managed to put together for a speaker in that price range. Now, only a few months later, Fabriq has taken it up a notch with its new Chorus Smart Speaker, which builds on the features of the original by adding voice-activated Alexa and a nice boost in sound quality in a $100 speaker.{/exp:char_limit}

Review: Bezalel Omnia Wireless Car Charger + Latitude Universal Wireless Charging Case for iPhone 7

Jesse Hollington October 11, 2017

While the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus now include wireless charging capabilities, it’s fair to say that this feature may not be enough to convince users of older iPhones to trade up to the latest model — especially considering the otherwise narrow gap between the iPhone 7 and new iPhone 8 models. Hence, we’re convinced there’s still a market right now for wireless charging solutions for older iPhone models, and this is even more true for accessories that provide utility beyond simply charging, as is the case with Bezalel’s new Omnia Wireless Car Charger — a vent-mounted car dock that’s designed to work with the company’s own Latitude Case to provide an easy way to keep your iPhone juiced up on the go without having to fuss around with cables. {/exp:char_limit}

Review: Ecoxgear EcoSlate Rugged Waterproof Bluetooth Speaker

Jesse Hollington October 10, 2017

Ecoxgear’s new EcoSlate is the second speaker we’ve looked from the company, which specializes in ruggedized products for outdoor lifestyles. While we were a bit disappointed with last year’s Sol Jam — an average and somewhat awkwardly-shaped speaker with a solar panel on top — EcoSlate promises to be a much more versatile speaker both in terms of its design and its audio fidelity, with standard Bluetooth connectivity along with the ability to pair multiple speakers, illuminated buttons on top, and an integrated lantern. {/exp:char_limit}

Gear: Pong Radiation Reduction Case for iPhone 7 Plus

Jesse Hollington October 10, 2017

While there’s still a lot of debate about the harmful effects of the radiation emanating from cell phone radios, there’s no doubt that the average iPhone emits at least some radiation and that the jury is still out on exactly what the long-term effects may be on the average person, not to mention the fact that some people may be much more sensitive to high-frequency RF signals. For those who don’t want to take any chances, the new…

News: Apple releases second developer betas for iOS 11.1, tvOS 11.1 + watchOS 4.1

Jesse Hollington October 10, 2017

Apple has released a second set of betas for iOS 11.1, tvOS 11.1, and watchOS 4.1 to registered developers. The release notes for all three platforms mostly indicate bug fixes, although watchOS 4.1 adds Apple Music streaming capabilities to the Apple Watch Series 3, including support for iCloud Music Library and Apple Music radio stations. Recent reports also suggest that iOS 11.1 may add support for Apple Pay Cash, with Apple employees already testing…
