Lego Women Of NASA Set Available From November 1st

Adnan Farooqui October 18, 2017

Lego confirmed earlier this year that it was building a “Women of NASA” set. The idea was actually submitted to the company by Maia Weinstock, the MIT deputy news editor, in its Lego Ideas competition. The set is ready now and will soon be available for purchase. Lego has confirmed that the Women of NASA set will be sold starting next month.

There are four different figures included in this set that pay tribute to the four exceptional women who achieved great things at NASA. It includes Sally Ride, she was the first American woman in space while Mae Jemison was the first woman of color in space.

Margaret Hamilton helped develop the software for NASA’s Apollo missions while Nancy Grace Roman played a big role in bringing the Hubble Space Telescope to life. All four of these women get their very own Lego versions.

Weinstock’s original pitch for the Women of NASA set also included Katherine Johnson, she was known for her accuracy in computerized celestial navigation. She conducted technical work at NASA for decades.

However, she doesn’t seem to have been included in the final set. According to reports, Lego ran into some problems in gaining approval from her and her family.

Lego is going to release the Woman of NASA set on November 1st for $25.

Nielsen Will Now Track TV Audiences On Netflix

Adnan Farooqui October 18, 2017

The age-old method of finding out how many people watched a particular program on TV no longer get the job done. That’s because millions of people have cut the cord and moved to online streaming services. It’s important to count those numbers as well to get a true sense of how many people watched a particular show. Nielsen is now going to track TV audiences on online streaming services as well.

“The syndication of SVOD measurement as part of Nielsen’s Total Audience offerings represents a big step forward in terms of moving closer to transparency within the SVOD marketplace,” said Megan Clarken, the president of watch at Nielsen.

Nielsen has been tracking demographic information and the number of people streaming a program for decades now. It’s essentially going to do the same thing for subscription-based streaming services like Netflix now as well.

The company’s new service, Nielsen Subscription Video On Demand (SVOD) Content Ratings, will measure streaming services’ program in a way that’s compatible with linear TV. The data collected will include ratings, frequency, reaches, and segmentation reporting.

Only Netflix has signed up for this so far, however, Nielsen is looking forward to adding Amazon Prime and Hulu to the list by next year. Other testers who want to try out this new service include NBCUniversal, Disney-ABC, A+E Networks, Lionsgate, Warner Bros. Television, and others.

Adobe Photoshop Gets Microsoft Surface Dial Support

Adnan Farooqui October 18, 2017

It has been almost a year since the Surface Dial accessory was released by Microsoft for its Surface Studio all-in-one computer. There aren’t a lot of apps out there that have support for this accessory but more are gradually being added to the list. Adobe Photoshop was one of the apps that users wanted most to get support for the Surface Dial. It has now been confirmed that Adobe’s flagship software now gets along very well with the Microsoft Surface Dial.

It was possible to use the Surface Dial with Adobe Photoshop previously, however, users only had access to basic functionality like zoom. Now, though, Photoshop finally has enhanced support for this accessory.

Adobe’s latest iteration of Photoshop has Surface Dial integration to adjust the brush settings. That’s all it can do right now, Adobe has limited Surface Dial integration to the brush settings for now. It actually brings up a separate brush menu when the Dial is triggered. It allows users to adjust the opacity, size, flow, hardness and smoothing by simply rotating the dial.

It’s about time that Adobe enabled this functionality in the app for the Surface Dial. It also doesn’t hurt that the support has arrived merely weeks before Microsoft’s new Surface Book 2 is due to be released. The new Surface Book 2 is going to be released in November.

Snapchat Dancing Hot Dog Costume Now Available For $80 On Amazon

Adnan Farooqui October 18, 2017

The Snapchat dancing hotdog was introduced earlier this year when the app introduced augmented reality filters. It’s a 3D rendering of a smiling hot dog that’s wearing headphones and dancing to some wicked tunes. It took the world by storm and now it’s going to make an impression at Halloween. Snap, the company that owns Snapchat, is actually selling a smiling hot dog costume on Amazon for $80.

Snapchat first renamed itself to Snap last year before launching its first piece of hardware ever, a pair of glasses that make Snapchatting easy called Spectacles.

This is the second piece of “hardware” from Snap, and who knows, it might end up selling more units than the Spectacles. Snap is selling the smiling hot dog costume on Amazon itself for $80.

It’s described as a hot dog tunic with attached sleeves and hands, and pants with attached shoe covers. The costume comes with a pair of fake headphones to complete the look. The gloves are removable so users can quickly pick up their phone and start Snapchatting while looking like the beloved AR filter.

If you’re in the market for a new Halloween costume, then perhaps you should consider looking like the avatar that Snapchat referred to as its “first augmented reality superstar.”

HTC U11 Plus 4,000mAh Battery Rumored

Adnan Farooqui October 18, 2017

HTC is expected to launch a slightly improved version of its U11 flagship smartphone in a couple of weeks. There have already been many rumors about the HTC U11 Plus, it’s said to be the bezel-less version of the flagship that HTC released earlier this year. According to a new rumor, the HTC U11 Plus is going to tout a 4,000mAh battery.

Previous reports have suggested that the HTC U11 is going to have a 6 inch bezel-less display with Quad HD+ resolution and 18:9 aspect ratio. The existing handset has a 5.5 inch display with large bezels at the top and bottom.

HTC ROM developer LlabTooFeR, who is usually right about his predictions, revealed on Twitter that the HTC U11 Plus is going to get an upgrade in the battery department. The new handset is reportedly going to have a 4,000mAh battery.

It’s also said that the physical size of the device will be comparable to the U11 with some minor increase in the dimensions. That’s to be expected if the display size is being increased slightly.

HTC has sent out invites for an event on November 2nd in Taipei, Taiwan. It’s expected that the company will officially launch the HTC U11 Plus at this event.

Motorola’s Alexa Moto Mod Costs $150

Adnan Farooqui October 18, 2017

Motorola has made a Moto Mod that brings the power of Alexa to its Moto Z phones. However, the module costs more than what you can get an actual Echo device for. The Alexa speaker Moto Mod is going to cost $150, which begs the question, why not just buy the $99 Echo?

The new Moto Mod from Motorola is a speaker attachment that comes with Alexa. It’s officially called the Moto Smart Speaker with Amazon Alexa. It’s quite similar to the existing Soundboost 2 speaker mod but with the obvious addition of Alexa, Amazon’s virtual private assistant.

The module is complete with a glowing blue LED ring on the back, the kind that you’d normally get on an actual Echo device. The module is essentially an external speaker that has Alexa baked in.

The question is, though, do you really need one? It’s not like the handsets that this module is compatible with don’t already have Google Assistant. Moreover, the price itself is too high. $150 is enough to buy you an Amazon Echo and an Echo Dot speaker.

Only customers that feel that they absolutely need to take Alexa with them wherever they go might be the ones spending $150 on it. Motorola is going to start selling the Moto Smart Speaker with Amazon Alexa starting next month. It will be available from Motorola, Amazon, and Best Buy.

Monument Valley 2 Android Release Date Confirmed

Adnan Farooqui October 18, 2017

Monument Valley is one of the most beautiful smartphone games that you’ll ever play. I’m not really into smartphone gaming but this is a title that held my attention well for hours. It came as a bit of a surprise when the game’s developer confirmed in June this year that the title’s sequel will be released this year. Monument Valley 2 was an iOS-exclusive at launch but developer Ustwo has now confirmed the Monument Valley 2 release date for Android.

The original title was a breakout hit, it was downloaded over 30 million times and was very well received across the globe.

Monument Valley 2 retains the peaceful puzzler vibe of the original. There’s greater focus on the narrative now as we’re told the story of a mother and her child over 14 chapters. There are new ways to interact with the puzzling world and new levels to explore.

Monument Valley 2 was only launched for iOS devices back in June. The developer did say back then that the title would eventually be released for Android. It has confirmed today when that’s finally going to happen. Monument Valley 2 will be released for Android on November 6th, 2017.

Those who are interested can pre-register for the game so that they’re notified when it becomes available.

Google Testing Third-Party Account Support For Gmail On iOS

Adnan Farooqui October 18, 2017

Google makes a pretty robust email app for mobile devices. The Gmail for iOS app is limited to Google accounts, though, but it looks like this is going to change soon. Google has confirmed that it’s testing support for third-party accounts on Gmail for iOS. This will enable the app to function more like the native Mail app on Apple’s mobile devices.

This is going to be a new functionality on the Gmail for iOS app. Android users have already been able to add third-party accounts to the Gmail app for quite some time now. There’s a reason for that, though. Gmail is often the only email app on many Android smartphones so it makes sense.

It’s going to be a big shift for Google to bring this functionality to its iOS app. It will enable users to configure their Outlook, Yahoo, and other email accounts with the Gmail app. Looks like Google wants Gmail to be one of the most popular email clients on iOS.

The functionality is in beta stage right now, so users who want to join it have to sign up. They will need to be a current user of the Gmail iOS app, need a non-Gmail email account, and have to be running iOS 10 on their device. Google is yet to confirm when this functionality will be rolled out for all users.

Windows 10 ARM Battery Life Will Be A ‘Game-Changer,’ says Microsoft

Adnan Farooqui October 18, 2017

Microsoft confirmed its plans for ARM-powered Windows 10 notebooks last year. The notebooks will be powered by the Snapdragon 835 processor from Qualcomm and they will be able to run conventional desktop apps on Windows 10. These notebooks were expected to arrive this year but not much information is available right now about when they’ll arrive. When they do arrive, it seems that the battery life is going to be a major selling point.

According to a new report, Qualcomm is committed to bringing the ARM-powered Windows 10 notebooks to market by the end of this year. OEMs like Lenovo, ASUS, and HP are all developing their own ARM-powered Windows 10 notebooks.

Microsoft is claiming that these notebooks will be able to get multi-day battery life. “To be frank, it’s actually beyond our expectations,” said Microsoft program manager Pete Bernard at the Qualcomm summit in Hong Kong this week.

He added that the company set a high bar for its developers and it’s now beyond that. “It’s the kind of battery life where I use it on a daily basis. I don’t take my charger with me. I may charge it every couple of days or so. It’s that kind of battery life,” Bernard said.

He also mentioned that the ARM-powered notebooks will be a “game-changer” for laptops. That’s all well and good, but people are certainly more interested in finding out when these machines will be unveiled and what kind performance can be expected. Unfortunately, there’s no word on any of that as yet.

Plex For Android Auto Brings Seamless Media Integration To The Car

Adnan Farooqui October 18, 2017

Car manufacturers are great at building cars (who would’ve guessed, right?), but they aren’t that great at developing nice media control interfaces. Besides, every car manufacturer has their own take on a media interface so there’s no uniformity. Fortunately, the tech companies decided to step in a few years ago and launched extensions of their mobile operating systems for the car, namely CarPlay and Android Auto. Plex today announced its support for Android Auto. It will enable seamless media integration in the car.

There are plenty of new cars out there that come with support for Android Auto right off the production line. There are also many third-party units available with Android Auto support.

Plex for Android Auto is going to make accessing your music in the car easier as it seamlessly integrated with the car’s display. The interface is simplified and the touch areas are larger so as to minimize distractions. All users need to get up and running is Android Auto and the new Plex for Android app.

They can then interact with Plex for Android Auto using the app on their phone, Google Voice, or the car’s dashboard. Any car infotainment system that supports Android Auto will be able to run Plex for Android Auto. The Android Auto interface for the app can also be used on an Android smartphone or tablet.

Plex says that the Android Auto support will be rolled out to everyone in the next few days.
